Chelsea wins Premiership title

 

For the second year in a row, the Roman Abramovich revolution produced another Premiership trophy at Stamford Bridge. Making the title even sweeter for the Blues was the fact that they destroyed rivals Manchester United 3-0 on April 29, 2006 to capture the crown.

Lyon wins Ligue One title … again

FC Barcelona wins La Liga title

After winning its first title in 2005 since 1999, FC Barcelona couldn’t leave well enough alone and went on to win its second straight La Liga crown in May of 2006. Dutch coach Frank Rijkaard steered the team to successive titles and has them on course to possibly win their third-straight title in 2007.

Sevilla wins the UEFA Cup

On May 10, 2006, the UEFA Cup final took place at the Phillipps stadium in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, pitting English side Middlesbrough against Spain’s FC Sevilla. Steve McClaren’s Boro team battled bravely, but the Spanish club simply could not be stopped as they rolled to a 4-0 victory and their first-ever European trophy.

Bayern Munich wins Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich celebrated its 20th Bundesliga title and second straight in May of 2006. The Bavarian giants also recorded their second-straight German Cup victory (and 13th overall) over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Arsenal surges through Europe

 

Arsenal continued its amazing run through the knockout stages of the Champions League early in 2006, eventually making its way to the final to face Barcelona. Along the way, former Gunners captain Patrick Vieira returned to Highbury for the first time with new club Juventus to face Arsenal in the quarterfinals. The Gunners won 2-0 on aggregate.
