Unfortunate imitation hair: September 1995

By 1995 20-year-old Becks and his ‘Hitler without the mustache’ cut were a regulars in the Manchester United first team. Becks was one of three players controversially promoted from the youth ranks that season. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision was vindicated as United completed the Premier League and FA Cup double.

Grease Lightning” hair: November 1996

Mug hair: February 1997

Becks made his England debut in on September 1, 1996 in a World Cup qualifying a match against Moldova. Five months later he was established enough in the England team to get his portrait taken.

Seeing red hair: June 1998

Becks got sent off by referee Kim Nielsen after kicking out at Diego Simeone of Argentina during the 1998 World Cup second round match in St Etienne, France. England went on to lose the match 4-3 on penalties and Becks was blamed for the exit in England. The Daily Mirror tabloid fueled the firestorm directed at the player by printing a dartboard with his face as the bull’s eye for its readers to vent their frustrations on.

Hot summer hair: September 1999

Becks started the 1999-200 season blonder than usual. It must have been all that time training in the summer sun.

 

Spicy hair: February 2000

Becks and his pop star wife Victoria out on the town in London’s West End.

Cut down hair: March 2000

Becks takes a tumble during a match against United’s traditional rivals Liverpool.

Up yours hair: June 2000

The abuse that Beck was receiving from English supporters peaked during England’s 3-2 defeat by Portugal in Euro 2000, when a group of drunk England supporters taunted with chants including “we hope your kid dies of cancer”. Beckham, who had set up both England goals, gave the fans a finger-full after the game. While his gesture attracted some criticism, many of the tabloid that had previously encouraged his vilification decided enough was enough and called for fans to leave him alone.

Captain hair: November 2000

‘You know Fergie hates this’ hair: May 2001

Becks’ relationship with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson began deteriorating in 2000 when he missed training to look after his sick son Brooklyn while his wife Posh Spice went out on the town. Ferguson, who was very much an Old School task master, was none too impressed with the Spice Boy’s celebrity lifestyle.

Digital hair: November 2001

Becks was stripped of his centerline for a commercial for his video game.

The razor slipped hair: February 2002

Becks lets his mistakenly-shorn mop trump the sunglasses in his next commercial.

Rooster hair: June 2002

Of course, from the front the bleached mullet looked more like a rooster.

Bleach is back hair: August 2002

Oops, looks like someone spilled the bottle of World Cup bleach.

Girly hair: January 2003

Hey David, We are proud to declare as self-respecting real men that we have no idea what that thing holding your hair back is called.

Corny hair: May 2003

Becks sports a cornrowed cut during the match between South Africa and England in Durban, South Africa. England won the match 2-1.

Real hair: July 2003

Becks at the unveiling of his Real Madrid number 23 shirt after his summer transfer in 2003.

His Royal Hairness: November 2003

Becks kisses Posh, as he holds the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) he received 27 November 2003, from Queen Elizabeth II at London’s Buckingham Palace.

Nowhere to hide hair: June 2004

Becks lies on the ground after missing a penalty in the Euro 2004 quarterfinal shootout against Portugal in Lisbon. England lost.

Riding a new wave hair: March 2005

Becks brings a new do to the unveiling of the new England team strip.

Leading man hair: May 2005

Becks and Posh arrive at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Estoril, Portugal. Becks looked every bit the Hollywood star.

In-step hair: March 2007

Becks and Posh sport complementary dos at the Sport Industry Awards 2007 at Old Billingsgate in London, England.

In a Galaxy close, close by” hair: July 2007

During Beckham’s unveiling as a Galaxy player on July 13, 2007 the fashion commentator on Britain’s Sky Sports News declared the “beard” had to go!
